Hello all, I had an issue that i would like some advice on. I assisted a relative that was interested in buying a Fireplace insert with a glass door to be able to watch the fire. We ordered a Englander insert and installed it today. He originally had another brand of insert already installed. As we were starting to remove the old insert I noticed that the old insert had no stovepipe connected to it and that it was just set into place to freely vent into the fireplace. From that point I knew it would be a long day. I asked him if he had installed it himself which he answered yes. Sigh so any way we removed it and after extensive cleaning of large deposits of creosote all around the fireplace I read the instructions and it basically said that a direct conection would be to wire or remove the damper and stick a stovepipe up through the damper opening and either cover the surrounding area with sheetmetal or fire retardent insulation. He chose to stick the pipe up through the damper opening and since we didnt have any sheet metal or insulation handy to just leave as is. We fired the stove and it seemed to burn OK but I think it didnt have enough draft and I am very uncomfortable with the install. I would like to talk him into getting a SS liner installed directly from the insert up to the top of the chimney. Does any one know of a good place to purchase a kit for that and what I should be looking for in a liner. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

You probably need a 6" liner with with a top plate and a cap. Also I would recommend an insulation wrap kit which keep the flue warmer and add extra safety in the event of a chimney fire.
You should tell him NOT TO USE IT at all the way it is now. It is probably leaking CO slowly into the house since the damper is not sealed.

This is precisely the type of person who has a chimney fire.
Something needs to be done. Best case is he will have poor draft and loose a lot of warm air out the open flue. Worse case is Darwin will pay him a visit and things will get ugly. Try to get him reading some of the posts here. It could save some lives and his property.
Remember, that stove has a secondary air intake in the back. I don't think it's going to work too well if you just block off the face of the insert so don't even let him try.
Sweep the entire flue and check it's condition before doing anything. Then follow the manual and/or the posts from the experts here. You will need to know the size and condition of the flue to form a proper decision. Also length and whether it's interior or exterior.

Well I spoke to him today and he was reluctant , but then his wife overheard the situation and the decision was quickly made. i will be ordering a new liner today. I looked at the ones on Chimney Liner Depot.com and was wondering if i need to have the insulation or not. The chimney is roughly 12x12 and less than 20 feet tall. The liner should be 6 " to match the flue outlet of the stove. The chimney is between the house and the garage with less than 6 feet sticking out the top. Also how do I go about making a block off plate and what material should I use. Thanks again.
Good plan. As for insulation, it all depends on whether you want a heated garage or not.

Thanks to you BeGreen, The links really were helpful and interesting . According to UPS tracking the liner kit should be here today and hopefully installed before weeks end. I appreciate all the advice
Hello to all, Just wanted to update on the install. We installed the liner that we got from Chimney liner Depot and my wifes grandparents have been burning for a couple weeks. They are happy that spring is coming but wish they had more time to use the new insert. They still fire it up in the evenings and there favorite time is watching the red sox and the fireplace . The 13 nci really puts out the heat and they are happy about how little wood they have been using. Much better draft with the liner. Thanks to everyone for there advice.
