very strange weather for my part of the woods

Ben wet and mild here too, all our flowers outside have taken a beating....many dying
Its our first full year here so we didnt get the chance to plant a garden, but I can tell you that people have told me similar stories. Anywhere you drive around here corn plants are half the normal size too....not to mention, a little off topic, the absurd amount of mosquitoes and gnats we have (just relating off things with all the rain!).
Cant help but think we are in for a solid winter this year, acorns are already dropping here.

Hear is my rant........

Yep ....we have Blight here in parts of CT....it is playing hell with crops.
I can hear the grass growing at night. I should have about 3 batches of Pickles curing.....but not this year.
I've never seen cuke beetle infestation like this before......Bacterial wilt has hit my acorn squash. Anything in the cucurbit family on my property is taking a huge beating....
My pumpkins down in my other patch seem 'mildew and disease resistant”
But the female abort rate is like 75%

The 3 things in my garden that seem "unaffected" are.

Snow peas ( I have wheelbarrow loads)
Green beans/wax beans (growing faster than my lawn)
Sweet corn (Huge massive healthy looking stalks) ....tons of ears not quite ready to harvest yet)

My garden is doing horribly this year. I was a tad late getting my seeds started this year first of all, but add that on to not being able to even take the flats outside from under the grow lights almost 3 weeks later than usual. Then add that to not being able to get them into the ground for a few weeks after that. My tomato plants are just now the size they usually are near the end of June.

Up here in Yankee Land the weather has been crazy until last week . . . rain, rain and more rain with much colder than normal temps. I liked the cooler temps for working outdoors, but this was offset by all of the rain which kept me from going outdoors to work. As I said, within the last week or two things have started swinging around to more normal summer-like weather up here.

My garden is a mixed bag. My corn is just about lost -- I think I have maybe 8 corn plants that came up and are growing out of 5 rows. Potatoes seem to be coming along although they had a late start. The cucumbers are pretty sad looking as well. On the other hand, last Fall I had let some of my tomato plants go to seed and I had rolled the pumpkins into the garden and the plants that sprung up from these seeds is going nuts -- I have tomatoes and pumpkins growing everywhere in the garden -- in fact they're mixed in with all of the other plant varieties.

Dry as a bone here in SE WI. Predicting rain tonight and Fri. but only a 20-30% chance. Also calling for 90's over weekend.

Can anybody say ThermaCell? It has been many years ago that we found these things and I really thought I had been conned into buying one, but the skeeters were so thick that year everyone was almost eaten alive. However, what we found was....they really do work! We were so happy we bought another one.

For a good example: One year I was late getting wood stacked and that meant in May I was stacking wood. It just so happened that the skeeters hatched the day I began stacking and the temperature soared into the 80's along with the humidity. It was awful.

So, into the house I went and dug out the Thermacell. I laid it on the ground next to where I was working....and took off my wet shirt. I finished stacking the wood that day and never got bit one time after lighting the unit. I am a believer!


I see several mentions about pumpkins. I looked this morning and no pumpkins have formed yet! Blossoms, but not yet pumpkins. I think they won't have time to grow this year thanks to all the cool weather.

What is really good this year though is fruit. We have one peach tree that is really loaded! Not sure how many bushel we'll get but lots. Raspberries are almost done now but my wife picked every day after June 29. Tons of apples too.

I am from Central KY and have the same weather as Ridgerunner30. Ridgerunner30-Are you from the Black Mtn. area? I have been down to Evarts a couple of times riding atv's. I do a lot of work in Eastern KY and I really love it.

Garden is a wash, Good crop of weeds, Wood piles are growing mold, skeeters just carried me and my daughter home from our evening wheeler ride, riding mower is on strike and this worries me a little. The deer are cleaning up the apples before they hit the ground! Thats not right for this time of year. COLD long winter me thinks

No complaints from me here in Fairfax. A bit more rain than what we've averaged the last 5 years or so, but not out of control. Also, nice and mild, not many 90+ days and lots of 70s and 80s. My stacked wood seems to be doing OK too, but it is under a nice canopy that keeps rain off unless it's a downpour. Tried my suburban garden again this year with tomatoes, peppers, and some corn (for the first time). It's coming along fine. We can't keep up with the tomatoes and peppers so my wife takes the surplus to work to share (I could too but I don't share well). The corn seems to be doing well; very tall and the ears are growing. I'm guessing they need another 3 weeks or so.

Out here we normally have no rain from early may until mid october. Walked outside this morning and it was raining. Temps in the 70's all week (should be pushing 90). It has been a cooler than normal summer for sure.

Cool and wet here too. My squash crop had produced one zucchini with more on the way (which I luckily ate) when we got hit by a storm that was rated one step lower than a tornado that wiped out all of my garden.

We were lucky. Didn't sustain much property damage and trees all intact. Many people lost trees, roofs, fences....still assessing the damage - still cleaning up.

Might add that I live at the foot of the Rocky Mountains and it is not tornado country. Caught us all off guard and to top it off it hit at 10:30 P.M. !!

I am one who prefers the cooler temps. to the 90* so I have been much more comfortable and am not afraid to get our water bill for the past 2 months. (I usually dread our summer bills that quadruple due to watering our lawn and garden.)

I am a bit nervous about winter. Do not want piles of snow that sits all winter which makes driving a bit nerve racking. (We usually get a storm followed by sun so our roads stay clear. Cities here not equipped with snow removal like in mid-west and east so roads get awful and it takes days before side roads see a plow....) I like the snow to stay up in the mountains. :coolsmile:

Garden here is lost, been to wet it is all flooded out. Mildew everwhere. south western nys wet and wet and still wet... when's summer coming??

Darn cool here in mi. Got birds that are upPer peninsula dwellers here all summer.

We had Seattle's rain part of the day here today. Tiny little drops but a lot of them. Weird.

Yeah I am Southwest of you down in Prince Bill. I checked the other day and this was the second wettest April through end of June year on record. Number three was last year. If you want hot, it is coming. We have a week at least of scorchers in the forecast starting Sunday. Of course with the attendant thunderstorms that will put Southern Maryland in the dark again.

Interesting, I didn't realize Spring had been record wet. Got a bit of a break in July I think; at least I didn't have to cut the grass much. Gotta like that. I don't mind one or two (short) heatwaves, makes me feel like I'm getting my money's worth out of the pool membership. Thunderstorms? Yeah, what is it about MD and storms? They sure do have problems keeping the lights on. Glad I'm on the correct side of the river.

We've had the second wettest summer on record. Our corn fields are half the height they should be. Broccoli won't stop flowering, zuchini grows to mammoth size(doesn't taste as good) tomatoes are all green and will ripen all at once, peppers are fine unless you want them any color than green. On the other hand, lettuce, strawberries, carrots, peas, bush beans and sunflowers are doing great. The grass needs cutting 7 to 10 days sooner that normal.
