On of my ongoing pet peeves...."Free shipping".

Checked Northern's site. Of course the free shipping is for "the lower 48 states only". Again, discrimination against Alaska and Hawaii.
No problem, I chose to live where I am. But I have a question, I asked the saleslady on the phone (I think they are located in Minnesota). If I lived in Maine, you would ship to me for free, correct? Yes, that is correct, says she. So, I ask, can you figure out what the shipping from Minnesota to Maine would be, dollar wise, for that person who is getting it free, THEN give me that amount as a credit on what MY shipping is going to be?....Big silence at the end of the phone. Ahh, I don't think we can do that, sir. Why not, I ask? Well, you're in Alaska, says she. I said, you're not shipping it to me for free, I am just asking your company to credit me the amount for the shipping costs to the maximum distance of one of your qualifying customers from your shipping point. Doesn't that seem very fair? More silence....Sorry sir, she says, we can't do that.

So, who's full of hot air here?

By the way, I go through this many times a year with different vendors.

I've worked in customer service jobs a bunch in my life. Do you really expect the person taking the call to be able to answer that type of question? They don't make the policy, they're advised of the policy and that's it. Companies I have worked for will usually just have a blanket amount for shipping, they lose on it shipping some places and make up for it when shipping some place closer.

You say it's not a problem since you chose to live there but it obviously is or you wouldn't deal with it many times a year. ;)

But you can look out your back door and see Russia. You have to pay for the view.

I think i'd rather see Lenawee county than Russia :p

Some days you're the Bear, some days you're the Salmon........ :cheese:

Seriously, I can see why it's more expensive to ship to Hawaii because everything has to go by sea, but don't they truck things up to Alaska? If everything has to go by sea to Alaska, then I guess I get the free shipping price exclusion, but you're right, why couldn't they offer you the same "discount" that they're offering to their free shipping customers? I mean, you still have to pay the actual shipping costs, it's not like it's a flat rate shipping deal where they really have to eat it incurring the higher shipping costs to Alaska........

I love Alaska, I've spent 8 or 9 Summers fishing up there commercially.

Oh well, every form of refuge has it's price as the song goes.........

Wait a minute, isn't that a wee bit off topic?

At least he doesn't have to worry about those Trinity church followers/believers.. :coolhmm:

Wait, that's off topic too...ooops.

Enough’s enough...? :zip:

Alaska's a great place (minus the really cold season-and the extra shipping...).

Just get Sarah Palin to lead the Alaskan National Guard to conquer British Columbia. Then you will be contiguous USA and they can't deny you!

Instead of dealing with the call center phone answerer, send Northern and email and ask, Politely, if they can accommodate some adjustment for your circumstances. A mail order supplier I used for years in Wyoming took the approach that all buyers are deserving individual consideration. May help, amy not.

If all else fails, ask Sara if she can pick one up on her next jaunt East and write it in as extra baggage.

Northern has some great stuff, but ask before you buy. Also, check out if they have some stoves not in their catalog, or that they might have access to. Maybe they can even arrange drop shipping.

For the Alaska folk maybe they can catch a PE for you and have it direct shipped????? Maybe?????

semi on-topic. I want to buy that lit'l sweetie stove, but it costs too dang much. why is it the cheapest wood stove on vogelzangs site, but it costs more than the 96,000btu boxwood stove on Northerntool's site?

with free shipping, I'd pay 150 bucks for that stove and forget about my modified barrel stove idea for the baby's room...i mean new shed.

Fortunately, Sarah doesn't live here anymore. Word is the family is shopping homes in the East.

I hope, soon, a lot of the folks enamored with her rather abrupt rise to fame come to realize she really isn't the Second Coming. Before she fixes her 'do and puts on the designer glasses in the morning, its Rush Limbaugh looking back at her in the mirror.

She promotes herself well, that's about it. Lotsa suckers out there.

Fair warning, don't flock to the book store. I've read her from cover to cover the past few years and there won't be no movie. Save your money.

Strong opinions on Sarah P. But the real question here is.....If you ordered her book - would they give you free shipping?????

why move so far away and then complain about your shipping costs ? its common sense .just becuase it became part of the usa doesnt mean it should all be the same price location and distance plays a big role in shipping ,shipping costs good money and until we have a Star trek deatomizer device theres charges like fuel costs and maintenace on transportation vehicles be it planeboat or semi to get things way up there.judging from your political views it sounds like youd be better off and much happier in Cuba than alaska ,maybe Fidel or Rauol will give you the free shipping you want

A lot of stuff is barged to Alaska . . . perhaps more economical than trucks.

HehHeh . . . I should give you my sister's phone number in Portage . . . sounds like she shares many of your same sentiments about Sarah P. . . . and don't even get her going about Wasilla.

Don't you get an oil tax credit that more than makes up for any shipping costs?

Thanks, Rush, for those words of wisdom. By the way, enable your spellcheck. Does wonders for idiots.

I didn't move here.

So I see that the kind gesture of one person alerting another of free shipping has turned into another gripe fest.

"I didn't move here".

How did you get there if you didn't move???

Boy, you're a sharp cookie..

Lets see, if I didn't move here, what's the only other possible way?

Perhaps, born here?

Ask one of the ice road truckers if they will drop it off on the way up north.

Just make sure it is Lisa. Then you might not even need the stove to stay warm.
