I have side shields on my 13 because initially I needed them for a clearance issue. Now that I've changed some things my clearance is fine without them. Will there be any difference in the functioning of the stove with them on or off? Tia

Convection should be better with the shields. Cool air pulled in from floor level and ejected as hot air out the top of them. Without them more radiant heat from the sides.
