hello, we have just bought an old place in Maine and there is a fireplace that we were told was working at one time. It seems to be lined with sheet metal and as you look up towards the flu, there is insulation hanging down where the sheet metal liner seems to have caved away. This may be an old heatform style fireplace. If it is rotting at the top it should not be used as is. It may need to have an insert installed to make it safe. This should be inspected and the condition determined by a professional, certified chimney sweep.
