We have a 17-yr old Ashley, AFS241. Door hinge is cracked and we can't afford another whole stove. No way to find a replacement door. A friend, whose husband makes metal doors and such, said her husband could fabricate a frame with a door and attach it to the stove. Would this work, or would the iron end up too hot and become detached?

ALSO--the cat died several years ago. Are cats specific to the brand of stove, or is it possible to get another brand of cat and install it?

Thank you--I haven't known anyone to ask these questions!

Also check Condar for cat's. Good prices, good cat's, good customer service.

Welcome to the forum. If your friend has the skills to PROPERLY make and FIT the door, it could happen. There is nothing magical about them. Having a design that won't warp and will seal properly is really the only difficult part.

Like Jags said, no reason a steel door won't work.
