Burned wood in this joint for 25 years before that first ember got by me and burned a small hole in the carpet. Felt like I had failed. ;em

We have carpet and it is no problem. We vacuum pretty much every day.

Unbeknownst to us, an ember got on our Persian rug. Burned a hole the size of a dime right through before we noticed it. Cost about $300 to get it rewoven. Now have fiberglass mat covered by a dark poly mat in front of insert (cause the fiberglass mat is an ugly color). Anyway, be careful of embers.

We have carpet in the room with the insert, and the problem is not ash. It is the bark from bringing in the yet to be burned wood. What a mess.

That's what's good about the rug. It covers a hardwood floor and the wood cart rests on that (easily brushed).

I'd go wood or laminate and then an area rug... best of both worlds.
