I have a prefab fireplace and I am going to install an insert. There is a round cast iron damper that swivels open and closed. How would you go about removing it?

i just done one in mine, look close at the shaft where the damper hooks to it , i had a screw at each end and used a cut off tool and ground the screw head off, the shaft just slid out at the ends.

I used a sawsall with a metal cutting blade and cut the pin off the one side and that left the otherside pull out.
