Hi guys,

My Jotul Rockland wood burning insert will be inserted on an existing chimney (heatilator type) with a SS liner to reach the very top of the chimney. My installer is going to seal of the top of the chimney with a block-off plate. His viewpoint is that the bottom (near the damper area) does not need a block-off plate. He is willing to install it for an additional $150 but doesn't recommend the additional spend.

His perspective is that the top of the chimney will have a block-off plate making the second block-off plate near the damper redundant.

I read several other perspectives saying that the block-off plates will increase the stove temperature and keep the cold air effectively when the stove is not in operation. How does this play in my type of install? Please advice.

Thanks

Most here agree that a block off plate at the damper area is a good idea, but you could always try it without and see how it works out and decide for yourself. Some people just stuff rock wool insulation into the damper area as well, if it were me I'd install block off plate with insulation on top.
