    unless you had a tall chimney it must have been hell to get that going.

    I suspect that's what the bypass is for. I've had wondered why something like this isn't incorporated into stoves more to extract more heat such as in a masonry heater. If a wood burner, i'll bet that thing accumulates creosote like mad. I wonder if it has a CAT. (heck it was only made in the 1800's...They had CAT's back then...didn't they? ;-)
