Thanks for all the nice replies. I don't know why, but the photo makes the inside of the old firebox look pink. It is not pink, but light brown.

Nice job. I really like how you carried the wood grain on the front under the stone, even around the angles. That is a very nice detail indeed.

Absolutely beautiful job, it looks great! I can't view the before picture though, I keep getting a forum error. You better pickup that sharpie before your first fire or you'll have a blue hearth! ==c

Very nice, love the stonework and the simple, yet elegant, mantle.

Looks great, Is the wood mantle a little too close to the stove top though? are you concerned about that? (I have a similiar issue that I resolved with a copper heat shield)

Thanks again, everybody. It is nice to hear others opinions. I will try to repost the before shot. The mantle is a wooden stand-in for a fire rated faux mantle that is on order.

I tried this before, but only got one photo to upload and that was the finished project. Here is the before: tiled surround and very inefficient zero-clearance fireplace. Some shots of the project along the way, and then the after. Jotul Oslo in front of new Champlain Stone "fireplace." I can't wait for cooler temps.

Not my first year with the stove. I have actually had it in place for two winters, but finally got the stone work done last week. Two back surgeries put the project on hold for a while. I am so happy to have it done. The family was getting a little tired of looking at Durock with an ugly scratch coat. Although it was funny when we had some visitors who thought it was the finished product and were politely complimenting me on it.

I love the Oslo. It has been great for heat and looks great, too.

Well, glad the back is doing better. As part of your physical therapy, I think you should come over to my place and do some stone work for the garage I want to build. :)
