Excellent thread, especially for those new to solid fuel heat. Some great information and examples given. Lets us know just how long an ember can remain and how much damage one small hot ash can do. I've observed hot embers in my stove many days after the stove was "shut down." As mentioned, ashes are an excellent insulator and this is why I like to get mine spread and cooled ASAP..
