I looked hard at the C550, took my tape to the store and measured the firebox. It's 2.1 cubic feet, and that's a generous allowance, measuring tight from the andirons to the back of the box, floor of the box to the very bottom of the secondary air tubes.

Well, not all of them are steel. The VC WinterWarm (Small) is definitely a cast iron firebox in a sheetmetal cabinet (I know because I had mine apart), and so are the VC Montpelier and WinterWarm (large). Morso inserts are also cast fireboxes, not steel.
 
It's been a long while since I looked at the VC inserts, but I just dug out the docs and you are right. Evidently it was just the shroud I was looking at when I saw one last. My bad. :red: Thanks for the correction.
