Another trip to the dump, another unknown wood.

Very light, feels like I'm lifting poplar. Splits like butter.

Thanks.

The bark kind of looks like pine to me.

How about catalpa ? http://dendro.cnre.vt.edu/dendrology/syllabus/factsheet.cfm?ID=25
It's a light density wood, with a heartwood that has uniform, solid light brown color.
If catalpa, then fresh-split or cut it has a distinctive smell too.
The spp. is monoecious - large showy flowers. This time of year on the ground look for its fruit - 8"-10" capsules that appear bean or cigar like. Leaves are distinctive large and heart-shaped.

You may be on to something with that.

This might be it. Google images looks pretty similar. This also has a smell to it that's hard to describe.

Tulip poplar / yellow poplar is very heavy when green, light as a feather when dry.

I couldn't figure it out until I read the Catalpa comment. Another similar wood is Paulownia, which is similar to Catalpa. I have some wood I think is Paulownia in my stacks. It is very light but doesn't rot, so I use it as the bottom layer of my stacks. When the stack is burned, the Paulownia (or Catalpa, I am not sure) goes under a new stack to keep the good wood off the ground.
