I don't have a brick chimney... Just a brick hearth with the cut out that the stove is sitting in... All of the brick stops at the mantle.... The pipe continues through a boxed in dead air space on into the attic and out the roof...

Do you have a block off plate stopping air from shooting up the empty air space? How is the empty air space transitioned to the Upper portion of the fireplace?
