I have a MT Vernon AE free standing it is installed corner out 4" vent with O.A.K I have a 45 degree and total of about 3 ft of venting with end screen. It is an 09 model and has all the updates. I do know alot about these units but have one problem no one can answer. I clean my stove weekly and clean and leaf blow the venting monthly. The problem is after start up the stove howls until it warms up. I've taken the O.A.K off no change. I tried taking end screen off no change. I tried different settings on the control board auto, manual 1 2 3 4 5, softwood, hardwood, utility. I took out the intake baffle no change. I thought of back pressure and expansion of air through the stove. I do know inserts do howl when warming up due to the vent length but should not apply here. I switched to corn and was worse. I checked the ash pan gasket it seals all the way around but the noise does get louder if I remove the ash pan. I wonder if the tach in the combustion blower is off and over reving or if any one else here has heard or seen this problem and I'm missing an easy fix.

Thanks in advance.

mine does it too, but only when the ashpan isn't fully seated in the retaining clips.

Yeah, I had that happen. Finished a cleaning... started it up and walk into the next room. A little while later I heard this noise. Walk back in and start looking over everything; found the ash pan was loose. I pushed it in and it instantly settled.

I have also found if the baffle is not perfectly center and is touching a side you will get a vibration that can carry throughout the house.

they all do it too some extent. i have tried every thing under the sun too fix it. its the difference in air temp. the more draft there is the worse it is. it will usually

I'm not completely sure about that...

I did have some excessive fan noise when I first got the stove and found that placing felt on the left hand panel to put some slight pressure on the convection fan COMPLETELY eliminated the noise I was hearing. I found the bracket for the fan was sloppy and allowed for some movement when the fan was at full RPM's.

I also had two metal pieces that were tapping near the feed tube. I bent the bracket back about an 1" and that disappeared.

Now, my stove is completely quiet besides the "normal" fan noise and the times I don't center the baffle or clip the ash pan.

I also have a freestanding unit and it does it too, but only during startup.

My Mt Vernon (non ae) was doing it so bad it woke me one night. I went to work and my sister stopped by my house and noticed the ash pan door open. I had forgot to close it the night before. It didn't howl anymore after that. It was throwing some huge flames too.

There was a update that amounted to a piece of tin mounted in back of the ash drawer. Remove the ash drawer and loosen two screws-then slide the piece of tin down in back of the screws and retighten the screws. it made the noise a lot less noticeable.

Mine does it some, but once after cleaning it seemed to be really bad. I found that I had the baffle slightly uncentered. I adjusted so the gaps were even on each side and the start up howl was greatly reduced.

Same here .. loose ash pan.
