yeah that would be a typical slammer install and that insert doesn't look like it is worth spending the money to hook a liner to it I would be looking for a new insert and liner if I where you.
 
Phew Locust, that's a little scary. Just a word of advice just because the previous owner may have run that for 20 years w/o a it problem doesn't mean you won't have a problem. At least get inspected but better yet upgrade.

Or remove it and use it as a fireplace.,..
