mucho appreaciated. I am going to go with downward lamps, and have some in mind, just trying to decide on size. I been eyeing some up at HD, one set is small maybe 6" round down bells, the other are near 10", and of course 3x as expensive. Just looking for more mood/ambiance lighting and highlighting the mantle. But don't want some tiny things or huge things. LOL, so simple a decision that I make a brain twister.
Restoration hardware has a large selection. They can be crazy expensive, but are good quality. This is what went into our bathroom remodel. They have a style and finish for almost any period decor. Might be worth looking through their catalog for some ideas.

Holy crap, too rich for my wallet. And I need 2.
I been eyeing these up... One has a 6" bell, the other is 10-5/8".
I might have to buy one of each and decide, then take the other back & replace.

Yes, they are pricey over there, but real metal and sometimes handmade in the US. The quality is excellent. We needed real nickel fixtures for the bath so I ponied up for them. Of course this was in 2003 and prices were more reasonable then. Looks like they have doubled for our fixtures.
The wall you are putting in is expansive. I'd go for the 10" bell. It won't seem too large with all that stone.

Ok, I got 1 medium one & 1 small one. Leaning towards the medium.

For something like that I would go with a row of four or five recessed lights with either wall washer, or regressed eyeball trims. I know that's probably not the input you're looking for.

Definitely the larger one, if you’re going this route. That small one looks like a Shriners fez.
Like @burnham, I’d be looking at recessed eyeballs in the ceiling. They make half closed trims, that would do a great job of putting light on that wall, without shining into the room. I have three over one of my fireplaces, and it’s a nice effect, even though I don’t have the exposed stone like you.

I took the fez back, and now have 2 of the larger ones. Burnham had to open his big mouth, and get me thinking. I moved the wall lamps outside the mantle , and bought LED strip lighting, 18' string to go under the entire top of the ledge above the stonework. So now I will have the two lamps for focal points, and a grazing effect down the wall from top.
Of course I have to fish more wiring up the side wall and over to the ledge area, where I will install an electrical box to plug the light string into. At some point I am going to turn the ledge into beams, same as I did the mantle.

Well, thanks again to burnham and his big ideas, I fished some new wire and added another switch, and installed the tape lighting.
I must say, I like it a lot. Didn't want eyeballs or gimbals, as I have no where to recess them into, at least until I turn the upper ledges into beams.
Pretty happy with the results. Just need a light up disco floor now ;-)

The lights are like a mood ring. Can they be connected via midi to your karaoke box? It's interesting to see how they change the room's atmosphere. One thing missing -> fire!
Looks like two different color temperature bulbs in the wall fixtures. They should match for best effect.

LOL, no karaoke here. There are several different settings, patterns etc. and 3 to 16 colors. The colors are relaxing, between the fire & colors, I'll be in a woken coma.
I got 2 dif LED "Classic" old style edison looking bulbs one is whitish, the other more older yellowish. Different brands. So I'll have to pick up a 2nd of one or the other.
Matching bulbs in wall lamps. Everything is dimmable also. Plus there is also ceiling fan lamps & two smaller crystal mini chandelier looking pendent lamps opposite the fireplace wall. I think I have enough lighting in the living room now. A light & color for every mood.
And of course, fire.

Way better off to the sides then right above the mantle. LED lighting is a great way to go. I would have done a coupled recessed LED cans in the ceiling above, but that's me.
Put those strips on a dimmer so you can chill out. That looks like a napping room. So sleepy! LOL

I keep trying to convince my wife that we should do a mantel, or at least some hooks behind the stove, but she says we don't need it... I only have recessed lights over our stove area now... not LED, and terrible 1980's fixture... at least I got rid of the track can lights and replaced those with recessed LED...

I'm with her. You have a nice clean look there. You might look at inexpensive LED lights for recessed cans. I just got some FEIT units that have trim attached on sale ($7.99) at ACE hardware that screw into the bulb socket in the can. This changes it from a down light to a much wider and pleasant wash of light.

i'm leaning towards not worrying about it and eventually just tearing down all off the drywall in the room, re-insulating, and redoing all of the electrical.
