Please help ID this log

If I can't get a splitter should I use a wedge and sledge hammer?

I did exactly that for many, many moons. But you will need more than one wedge. Three works best.
 
I've been hand-splitting some BL with a maul. Most of it is pretty easy but I've been throwing a few gnarly ones off to the side for the power splitter. In case it's Mulberry, I think that also splits pretty easily as a general rule.
 
Almost all the wood I get is Black Locust. I split all with a sledge and wedge. I've never had a piece I couldn't split.
 
I'm late to the party but I'd like to go with SJ on his BL vote. :)
