I ordered MT Vernon AE from a dealer at the begining of July. The order is sheduled to arrive in the miidle of september. I called around today regarding pricing and was told by three dealers that Quadrifire notified them that any orders taken now will not arrive until february at the ealiest. It made me alittle nmy order. I can can cancel my order and have one installed next week but it will cost me $800 more. is it worth it?

I really don't understand what all the panic is about. Why spend $800 more - that is probably the expected yearly savings for many people - meaning you are working for free for a year just to pay the EXTRA....let alone the normal cost.

It does not get cold enough to use a pellet stove until about the beginning of Nov (in most areas).....

The panic, I agree, is ridiculous. Is everyone going crazy because their cars don't get 30+ MPG? No, they are driving less! Turn the hot water heater down, turn the A/C up, invest in conservation, close off unused rooms....and $4.50 a gallon oil (my prediction this winter) will end up being the same as $3.00 oil.

Or, use the opportunity to invest the pellet stove money in a super-efficient furnace or boiler (if yours is old)....get the heat zoned.

Except in extreme cases, a pellet stove is a luxury and optional purchase. Whether you get it in Sept, Oct, Nov or Dec will make little diff. in the long run.

I use 800 gallons of oil a year to heat a 3300 sqft house. I drop the temp to 58 degrees most of the day and it is no more the 68 degrees 8 hours a day. This year my estimated heating bill will be $4000. My house is only five years old and the boiler runs at 83% efficeincy (based on my last tuneup). I am only asking for advise because if I have to use 150 gallons of oil while I wait it will cost me $750 (there is a 150 gallon minium for delivery). The dealer has pushed back the date on me by a month (supposed to now receive it by end of september and install some time in october maybe). I see the pellet stove as an investment that may pay for itself on 2 to 3 years. But if I have to drop another $750 while I wait I am problably better off spend $800 now for a definite install. Any thoughts.

If your peace of mind is worth $800 go for it, I am going to wait mine out.

Quad is sold out for the rest of the year this does not mean they are not building anymore stoves it just means the orders they have are larger then there capacity for the the guys in new england the dealers should have a idea of what they are going to get and when they are going to get it in about 1-2 weeks

Remember, you are not dropping another 750 since it would take 1 1/2 tons of pellets to do the same heating job - so you are spending an extra $300-$350 (and, of course, avoiding hauling that 1 1/2 tons)......

Really is your decision...I suspect in the end it will not matter much either way. If fuel goes up higher and stays high, your payback will be quick. If it comes down, you will be lucky and able to use some oil to supplement your pellets. Either way, it should be OK (like buying insurance...sometimes it is just as well not to collect).

Well I just sent some questions up the chain about Quad and Harman so we will see what comes back. I will let you know anything that I feel comfortable sharing.

This has the makings of a car accident - it is human nature to want to stare, but I somewaht do not really want to know because of the outpouring of feedback that may follow from disgruntled abanoned stove (almost) customers.

Well all I know right now is that possibly dealers were allowed to predict their sales and reserve units that will be built and shipped to them when specified. This would mean, yes maybe they are maxed out, but not every unit is sold to a customer, just to a dealer. I will know more details hopefully next week. Being that my boss had not heard of any mass shortages I don't think anyone needs to be in a panic state yet. But if you are in the market for probably ANY brand of pellet or wood stove you should consider purchasing now because by winter probably everything will be sold out though spring of 2009.
