Thinkin' I found some Box Elder today. Leaves in pic are immature. Trunk was a 40'+ run to the first crotch and almost 24" in diameter at the base. Man those rounds are ridiculously heavy! You can just about wring the water out of the wood and it left yellow goo on the saw bar. Hauled 3 truck loads out this afternoon (very rough/muddy trail, ruts well established!) and will go back for another 2 (at least) soon. Those 7 rounds had my Canyon on the bumpers.

I agree with the Beagler. Certainly not box elder. If you cut any of that you'll find some red in the wood. And yes, that hickory can be heavy stuff.

Hickory.

That would be the straightest Box Elder in the world if it were a Box Elder. I think it is hickory, but you could use it for shoulder season if you really had to.

Looks familiar...good job!

Even without seeing the pics, never seen or heard of a box elder that tall, straight, and clean. Good score.

Me neither but the leaves/bark were wrong for some kind of white oak which is what I thought initially. Had plenty of Box Elder around the farm as a kid and I agree I've never seen one so nicely formed.

So what you guys are saying is my back ache isn't for naught and I should go back and chop up the top? ;) Biggest hickory I've seen around here. Is it typical for hickory to leave yellow residue on the saw bar?

I think its pignut hickory

Nice score!

some box elder pics

Thanks BV! Bark looks very similar actually. Love the way the wood looks with the red streaks.

Had the leaves been more mature I don't think I would have mistaken it for Box Elder but then again, the long straight trunk should've been a tip-off as well.
