Just booked a vacation in the thousand islands in ny. Anyone have any must do's for the area? Never been there before. Going to rent a boat for fishing and cruising around. Would love some suggestions.

If you are a boater, you will have found paradise. Just be careful as you can go from 300 ft to nothing very quickly and most of the nothing will end your prop/shaft. There is no just keeping an eye on your depth meter when boating in the 1000 islands.

If you have time with the boat, the ride to Bolt Castle in Alex Bay and Kingston on the Canadian side are fun.

Solarwood, My son (17yrs old) has a boaters license. Is that sufficient for us? I don't have one.

gzecc I'm about 45 minutes from Clayton if you need some phone numbers for boat rentals I'm sure I can help, the water was down close to a foot last I heard. Some great bass fishing in Clayton.

gzecc the boat traffic in that area can be real heavy this time of year.

Drivers license is all you need in NY unless it is a jet ski. Also know that if you are on the other side of the imaginary line fishing, as soon as you drop a line or anchor into the water you are risking a ticket and some hassle.

We will be ther at the end of july.

What do you know, i'm headin up there next week. :) Got the fishin rods packed and the family is itching to go. My bro has family that has a lake house in Cape Vincent and we'll be spending next week there. I think we are going to go visit Boldt Castle, Singer Castle, and a couple other places too. Hope you have fun!

Here's a list of stuff that we are looking at doing when we are there, just for your info:

Boldt Castle (about 45 minutes away) - http://boldtcastle.com/
Playground at Burnham State Park (5-10 min away)
Antique Boat Museum (about 20 minutes away) - http://www.abm.org/
Cape Vincent Aquarium - http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/27069.html
Tibbett’s Point Lighthouse - http://www.capevincent.org/lighthouse/lighthouse_001.htm
Singer Castle - http://www.singercastle.com/start.html
1000 Islands Area (Boat tours are available; such as: http://usboattours.com/1000islands/ )

If anyone has some other info on any of that stuff, let me know!

Stacked, Thats good, If you could give me you favorite 5 activities in the area. We will be renting a boat and will be there for 6 days.
Thanks

If you are entertained with history, Sacketts Harbor and Fort Henry are pretty cool. You can take the ferry from Cape Vincent over to Kingston to see Fort Henry. http://www.forthenry.com/tourfort.htm. Kingston is also a port of entry so it is pretty easy to take the boat across and clear customs. Be advised though that Kingston is much more open water than around Clayton. The fort has commanding views of the river.

So here's my thoughts. I've had to come home from the trip early . . . I got a call while I was out fishing near Carleton Island that my house had flooded, and I raced home the next day to find disaster had struck. Now I'm fighting the insurance company who is being less than cooperative. So, I wasn't able to do all that we were going to do. A couple thoughts:

#1-The river is perch fishing heaven, if you like to fish, and if you like to eat perch, grab an ultra-light rod and you're headed to heaven!
#2-The landscape is gorgeous, standout gorgeous. I caught a sunrise one morning, and it was simply the best I have ever seen even in my years of hunting, fishing, etc. it was undeniably the best I had ever seen. The river is awesome.
#3-If it intrests you, study up or read up on the history of the War of 1812. The area is filled with war history from that era. (Numerous forts, Brown Mansion, etc)
#4-The two main castles are very interesting (Boldt and Singer) but that may be more of my personal intrest and taste.
#5-Watertown is where you will find the nearest Wal-mart, Sam's, etc. for supplies for the week.
#6-If you are renting a boat, make sure the motor is big enough. It doesn't look like it, but the current is a WHOLE lot faster than you realize. A small 25 horse motor can easily become overpowered on that river if the wind is moderately blowing. Also, whoever said to be careful about the water depth couldn't have been more right. It's amazing to be crusing along at 50 ft of water and then boom, its 5 ft and under in no time flat. The shoals are rocky and unpredictable.

It's sad that I couldn't spend more time there like I had planned. I do so plan to go back because we had so much fun, and the locals were among the nicest people I could have met. Now I have alot to deal with getting our house back together and dealing w/ insurance company. Thougths and prayers would be appreciated. We've lost a lot.
