I need a little help on this one. Could not find any leaves to help on the ID.
Very thick bark.
Appears to be Black Walnut to me.
I would guess sassafras. The smell should be very obvious if it is. Leaves on the saplings around it look like it also.
Bark looks like Bur Oak quite a bit,also Black Walnut.But the wood isnt dark enough for either.
You got it, its Sassy-gonna have a unique somewhat bittersweet aroma to it and be light as a feather when dry.
that red bark looks like sassafras to me, too. Should have a wonderful, almost "lemony" scent to it. Great shoulder season wood when it dries out.

The orange bark sez Sassy. Will sound like you're making popcorn in the stove.
My kids claim Sassafras smells like Fruit Loops. It kinda does in my opinion.
Where did you find one of those that is so straight?! Most of them grow very crooked.
