I just bought a homemade wood furnace with blower for my basement. The ducts are horizontal. If I lose power, will heat still move through the ducts to the upstairs?

Maybe, some. A properly designed duct system will have some rise on the runs.
And factory built wood furnaces usually have a gap around the air filter to allow for gravity flow upon power failure.
Sounds like this may be a good place to put an emergency heat dump.
And maple1 has a good point on the insurance...probably gonna be a problem.
