I could do that too if I had to but I like my stove top meter, my flue surface meter etc. IR gun can help you find air leaks into the house and has many other uses.
Get a pipe thermometer. They are not expensive and for me are an absolutely necessity for running a stove.
I will there not expensive. at first I couldn't figure out wich one to buy I went with the ir gun knowing the thermometer would be a little bit easier..
