It seems that the wood that off gasses the most in my stove is Red Oak. Not that it should be a question of burning it or not but got me to thinking what species typically off gasses the most or the least. Although the least wood be prefable if you have small splits in there to reduce the chances of puff backs. Any thoughts on this? Am I over thinking this:rolleyes:? Kevin

After being here for a very short time I cannot believe all the issues with wood stove operations. I guess I was lucky when I installed my first Morso over 25 years ago. Bought a used one later, the enameled one. for a back up but never put it in. Went to a Harmon TL300 8 years ago cause that Morso was too small, same pipe all the way to the top. What wood gives fewer gases? Sorta like global warming

I get relatively smell out of any wood when I burn it. Of course red oak smells a lot (good) when split, but I'm usually splitting it when it's 6-12 months old. I think it's about moisture/seasoning.

My wife would say I am.

I'm not sure what off-gassing is.

What is the problem?

As the wood heats up it gives off a flammable gas...that's what makes those cool (well, ultra hot) secondary flames.
Also, the unburnt gasses (smoke) from the incomplete primary combustion make up some of the fuel for the secondary combustion (and cat fuel) too

You know what's funnier than that is the dude who went to LL bean for kindling, can't make this stuff up.

Saw that. If that was left out in the rain though would still light off with all that resin in it. Depending on what was paid he could be having the last laugh, just saying:).
