This past fall a friend called and said he needed to clean out his barn to make room for an old 1950's Volvo he wanted to restore. He had a bunch of ash rounds, and some sugar maple, that had been in there for at least 15 years. Did I want the wood?!

We took it back to my place, and I split it up. It ended up being a little over 1 cord. After splitting a few rounds, I checked them with a moisture meter. Most were between 10 and 12%.

I'm just starting to burn them now. Awesome!

How big were the rounds? Nice to see they do eventually season in round form.
 
Most were cut to 16" length. I don't remember the diameters. Probably between 12 and 16" as well.
 
I let them them sit stacked for a year or so:)
 
Sorry to say, but no way that wood is dry - need to split and stack for at least two more years ;). Ha! Cheers!
 
It was likely down to 12% after 4 years and holding. Cannot get below relative humidity no matter how small you split or where you stack it.
 
Well we all know Ash is seasoned even if its green;lol
 
Wish I'd run into that. The wood has to be super! And yes, those rounds will be dry inside too.
