And of course we've already spent too much putting in a new FPX 36 and a gas fireplace in the house. But I know the wood stove will be a lot of work for not much heat (I love playing with the fireplace in the house, but in the shop I just want easy warmth). So a pellet heater came to mind. I don't care what it looks like, and it's fine if it stops when the power goes out - we'll just walk back to the house. Any suggestions as to what I should be looking at?

If the garage/shop has a cement floor I personally wouldnt go with a pellet stove. If its not heated all the time it would take quite a while to get temps back up when your ready to work in there. My favorite garage heat is a barrel stove and box fan.

A wood stove, once it gets going, can really crank out the heat. It is the constant loading of wood (or lack of) that can limit that. Pellet stoves are a more constant heat with loading only once every so often.
The first question in my mind should be: is it legal to have a wood stove or pellet stove in your garage (check local codes too)? And, regardless of that answer, what does your insurance company have to say about it? You don't have to answer on the forum - I just thought I would throw those things out there so you don't unknowingly get yourself into trouble down the road.
