The first year learning curve

Boy the learning curve is sharp for the first year. I have learned so much from trial and error and from Hearth.com this year that it makes me wonder what else I don't know yet.

At first I couldn't keep my glass clean... Mastered that.

Next I kept over-firing my stove way past 850 on reloads... Mastered that.

Them I kept smelling smoke in the house.... Learned to go outside to see which way the smoke was blowing before opening a window to manage my interior temps.

Just think how smart I'll be in 5 or 10 year Thanks to all who have taken the time to help bring me up to speed on Hearth.com

I concur...never knew the heart weighs 9-12 ounces!

I have learned alot as well and always recommend it - also if you burn wood for fifty years is that how you get a ornery wife?? Mine seems to have been that way before I started burning.........

I know how to clean the glass, but what is the best method of burning to keep it clean? I read a lot about raking the coals up front. I can only assume this keeps the heat closer to the front, I have an insert, and the more heat up front keeps soot from collecting on the glass?

Run the stove hotter to keep the glass cleaner.

1st year burning a VC Vigilant in the basement. Boy, talk about a learning curve. I have to say that I have learned so much here. You guys and gals are the best.
