here is my set up, older regency 1000s epa wood stove, 6 inch black pipe straight for 5 feet, 90 bend, 2 more feet of horizontal into the thimble, thimble dumps into a 13 by 13 flue tile the rises 40 feet up through the center of the house( stove has excellent draft, no smoke in house upon opening the door, clean glass). the flue tile is surrounded by what appears to be 6 inches of air space then brick the entire run. during the yearly cleaning i get 2-3 cups of brown crumbling creosote from the black pipe and thimble. during the 2 1/2 years ive been burning in this setup i haven't noticed any significant increase in creosote build up in the flue tile. cleaning the flue tile is extremely difficult, steep roof, no access from below hence it has not been cleaned since i have owned this place. has anyone had an experience similar to this and is this a ticking time bomb. also in the event of a chimney fire what are the chances the fire will spread into the house.
