A little help identifing a coal caboose stove

I saw this old stove and had to have it for my shop. The only marking I can find is in the ash door "cabinet stove CT 79 " not sure on the number. The old owner got it in Cocoa Beach, Florida. I really don't understand the draft in the back, as it has a lower draft control. Thank you for your time and knowledge!

The air intake on the back goes into the exhaust. It is called a “check” damper. This is to slow, or check the draft burning coal.

With it closed it will burn hard and fast. Only open for starting. Opening it is the same as closing a manual flue damper. This allows cool air into the chimney, slowing the rising exhaust gases, slowing the air coming in. Not for wood use, which is dilution air, forming creosote from smoke particles.

Do all latches have locking mechanisms to prevent them from rattling open? Railway stoves were used in stations, mail cars, and other occupied coaches. Not just caboose.

Railway stoves for over the road use will have large holes in the baseplate to bolt them down. I believe they were where the rail posts were added.

Thank you. Someone on FB identified as the inside portion of a circulator heater or cabinet stove. Now I am looking for a gasket for the door, and should I run one on the ash door ?

Yes, there were some cast iron circulator type heaters that function like a convective furnace. They had the check damper on the rear as well.

Gaskets were not necessary for coal. Secondary air around upper door is required above the coal bed for ignition of coal gas.

This will burn too fast and overheat using wood. Multi fuel stoves have air intake at bottom for coal, and an upper adjustable intake to use for wood. There is no slowing this one down using wood without upper air only.

No idea, could be as late as the 50’s. You’re only looking at the internals of a cabinet heater such as this;
