I just purchased my Country Hearth 2000 and so far I am enjoying it... I have a friend who keeps insisting that I need to put a damper in the stove pipe. The instructions say this is not recommended. Why not? I could use very specific information since she will not leave me alone about it. Thanks

How long is your flue?

You may need one you may not. It depends how strong your draft is

I installed one against recommendations and I'm glad I did. 20+ MPH winds aren't uncommon here, so the damper helps to control the draft on the windy days.

As mentioned it really depends on your draft. I would guess that in general most folks here most often run their stoves without needing a damper . . . the new stoves are set up more or less to run efficiently without one. In ten years of running my woodstove I find maybe three or four times in a burning season when I think it would be handy to have one . . . but normally it is a non-issue and the stove runs fine.
