Hello! I have just bought a home in New York State. It has a chimney for a wood stove (metalbestos model ss II type ht) This is a 1920's house and has an old oil burner and the oil company says that my tank has a crack in it and can not be refilled. While I will be replacing the tank I would like to use as little oil as possible. The house is about 2000 sf however part of that is an apartment that has a pellet stove already installed, so I am looking to heat about 1600 sf. There are 2 wood stove dealerships near me. Here are my choices:
Dealership 1:
Hearthstone Craftsbury in green enamel $3464 BTU 40,000
Hearthstone Green Mountain 60 $3499 BTU 60,000
Vermont Casting Encore $3889 BTU 48,000
Installation fee for all of these stoves $1500
Installation pipe and hearth around $1200
Dealership 2:
Pacific Energy Super Classic LE (porcelain over steel) $ btn 36-4 (depending on finish) BTU 72,000
Pacific Energy Alderlea T4 LE (porcelain over steel) $unsure BTU 56,000
Quadra Fire Millenium Series 3100 $ under 3, BTU 51,000
Installation fee between $500 and $600
Not sure why installation fees are so different. I have heard stove warranties can be dependent on licensed installer.
The Craftsbury is on sale and very pretty however I have been warned against enamel over cast iron due to possible chipping and discoloration. True or false? It is also on the small side and would probably more of a decorative heating element to compensate the existing oil heat. Pretty but maybe not practical? It was the stove I wanted when walking into the shop having done no research. Now having spent a lot of time on these forums I am completely baffled.
Installer who came by the house recommended the Green Mountain 60. He said, and I quote: "if you were my mom or my aunt I would recommend the Green Mountain 60. Also, I will probably run into you in the village..."
This is a big big purchase and very hard to figure out so any help here would be much appreciated.
Thanks!!!!

Dealer 2 has lower maintenance and easier to run options.

One important consideration is the flue system that the stove will exhaust (vent) into. Will the flue system be for a one or two story installation?

Regardless of stove choice, unless it is fed fully seasoned firewood, the results may disappoint. Getting fully seasoned firewood at this late date can be a serious challenge.

Knowing where he lives (or shops) matters; he's trying to make a living in a small place. He knows you'll meet him after all is said and done.

And from what I read here, the PE.
