Is heating the house the main purpose of the stove? The Defender is a pretty small stove. It will probably only be good for supplemental heat in a 2000 sqft home even when it is well insulated. You won't get overnight burns and reloading the stove quite often when you plan on burning 3 cords in it. A rear-vented large stove or a large insert would be better options when you are looking for a whole house heater. Both options will certainly cost more than $100, though. On the other hand, you may be disappointed when spending all that money on the Defender, liner, wood, etc. and not see much difference in your heating bill.

Give it a shot. The liner and the wood will still be there if you decide to do something else after giving it a try.

Just want to keep the basement warm around 70. You think this stove won't work for that.

Since you say the basement is finished and with carpet it may be able to do that. The question will be how much of the heat will go up the stairs. In addition, don't expect heat for more than 4 to 5 hours max from the stove. There is only so much wood you can put into a 1.3 cu ft firebox. The basement will almost certainly be cool in the morning (unless you heat it by other means).

It should work ok for that purpose. Are the basement walls insulated?

Good deal. That will help a lot. Can you post a picture of the fireplace as it stands now?
