What does everyone do with the "mulch" that is leftover after splitting. Bark, splintered pieces, and general mess that resembles mulch.

I considered that. I thought I could get some paper "lunch" bags and fill them with it to make good fire starters. But that would be one heck of a supply considering the mess in my driveway. Not really sure I have somewhere to store that currently.

Rake it up and burn it in the firepit. Larger pieces are used as kindling/tinder

I burn most of mine in the fire pit. Or, I rake it up, throw it in the back of the truck and return it to the woods where it came from.

Yeah they are easy and fun to build, all you need is some rocks and a shovel.....

I like to use a tarp under where I am splitting to easily clean up the mess...

We burn 100% birch........so, lots of big pieces of bark left over after splitting. Those get boxed up to use as kindling. Smaller bits and pieces get raked up and put on the compost pile.

I use it on a fresh light up for kindlin and to get a nice bed of coals

I usually split on the driveway which makes cleanup pretty easy. I pick up most of the scraps of wood and throw them in with the kindling, some of the gnarly chunks go to the fire pit, everything else gets taken back to the woods with the garden trailer. I used to split near the woods, underneath a Catalpa tree where grass hardly grew and would just leave the scrap on the ground as mulch.

I save a few buckets of sawdust and soak with waste cooking/motor oil for quick starts when the fire goes out. The rest gets taken to the chip/wood dump.

Geez... until finding these photos, I had almost forgotten what my lawn looked like. Was under 24" - 30" snow last week... today down to maybe 12" of frozen white stuff.

I remember my wife bagging up, trash bags, the stuff around the splitter. I didn't think much of it until mid winter, I tore a bag open one morning and put a clump of chips and chunks on the coals, opened the draft and went to shovel the stairs. When I got back the stove was hot and the fan had come on, I put a couple splits on in and never turned my nose up at those bags of chunks again.

What general mess. It's my wood processing area. The mulch just helps keep the mud out of my boots. The thicker the mulch the less likely that my bar will dig in the soil.

No. Imagine the expense to treat mulch with insecticides. We never have issues with mulch.

Besides, I know I would rather have a few bugs than some man-made chemicals scattered around the place.

Fungus and mold spores from mulch is a little problem in certain conditions.

I dump our wood scraps (splinters and mulch) in the BlueBerry Patch.

When I finish splitting or stacking there is usually a lot of junk. Mostly I leave it and my wife will tire of seeing it so then pick it up. We then burn it; use it mostly for kindling. Nice to have a wife to do that.
