I burn with the harman TL 300. There has been many questions to when the afterburn chamber is going. What I use for a guage is the temp and the color of the inside of the fire box along with the occasional rolling flame.

One other and which may be the best is checking the chimney. MY question is this a good way to check to see if the afterburn is kicked in. When it is kicked in should you or should you not see any smoke coming from the chimney?

Sometimes I see no smoke and sometimes I see very little!!!
