Alcove building time

Adding a second blazeking to complement the sirocco 30 downstairs and decided to build the alcove myself based on cost. The spot was previously framed for a gas stove so will be starting from scratch. I'll be using mortarless stone veneer from menards and making an arch at the top. Luckily we have 10' ceilings and 62" width to work with so clearances shouldn't be a problem. If anyone has tips from prior experience im all ears...



Started demo last night now travelling the rest of the week unfortunately.

Demo is done and bk princess is ordered. The stone came in as well. For those with alcove installs is there usually a box where the class a ends at the attic line and another box where the double wall hits the alcove or how does that work? Having the install done professionally so hopefully they know what they're doing - they want to do the chimney before the alcove is framed.

My buddy did an alcove with a Princess. Sounds like he had about the same clearances to work with.

That looks really nice. You dont happen to have a picture where the stove pipe goes into the alcove ceiling do you?

You will have a ceiling box that mounts in the top of the alcove at ceiling height that supports the chimney. Your double wall stove pipe will attach to that same box.
Sometimes it's difficult to get the required 6" clearance to the double wall stove pipe in an alcove. Some types of chimney allow the class A pipe to protrude trough the box as much as needed, then adapts over to stove pipe lower into the alcove.

Chimney crew is coming a week from Wednesday - hoping to have the pad done by then too. Haven't heard anything on how long the wait is from bk for the stove.

The chimney was stubbed in last week and construction continues. They forgot to stub the oak so i assume they'll need to come back for that before i put in the stone. Moving slow but were supposed to be in the 70s this week so not a big deal yet...

Continuing to make progress. Apparently the oak was backordered and still hasnt come in? I assumed it was a routine part. Stove goes in a week from Monday so hearth stones are priority 1 at this point.

In your photos it appears that your flue pipe is off center to the left by several inches. I take it this is by design due to some floor joists or rafters, etc. How do you plan to deal with this as far as the stove placement is concerned?

Ya there was a truss in the way so they had to offset unfortunately but hoping to hide the small turn needed to center the pipe behimd the curved alcove front (not yet built). Since the ceiling is 10' there should be enough room i think.

Still waiting for my stove door and oak but stone is progressing. The installer messed up the offset due to the truss so had to pull the stove forward (lucky i had an extra 6+ inches hearth depth so it worked) and as a result i cant have the arched header planned. So far though i really like the mortarless stone.

Lots of delays (some related to scrounge scores) but chugging along. Not really an alcove anymore i dont think but its 4 degrees out and 75 in the house with both bk on low so not complaining.

Wow that's looking really nice, can you take a close up of the stone work?

I think it looks pretty legit considering how easy it is to install. Its super heavy though; i think close to 4k lbs including the hearthstone when i picked up at menards.

What sort of structural support do you have under this part of your floor? Two tons of stone and hearth and then the weight of the stove sounds like an awful lot of added weight to put on a floor unless there is some additional support holding this up from underneath. It looks very nice.

The wall is exterior / sits on the poured foundation. I was kind of surprised it inly takes 7/16" sheeting to hold the stone though.

Months later but finally done pending some touch ups to the ceiling from marks i made installing the top row of stone.
