Aluminum can burn. That's what it's so dangerous to have aluminum wiring in a house. A loose connect and...poof. Even foil faced insulation can present problems in a house fire.

Should work. I don't recall ever seeing the aluminum foil on my grill catching fire. And if that block off plate gets as hot as my grill you will have bigger problems on your hands than it.

It also protects you from aliens and the US government from infiltrating your head.
But only if worn on head, as shown, not used in your chimney set up.

Last I knew aluminum foil was used for protecting my thoughts from aliens.
You do realize that the insulation on chimney liners is wrapped in aluminum foil don't you?
Aluminium wire has a tendency to move around when it's hot, working it's way out of a connection (not designed for AL wire) and creating a high impedance connection. Then it heats up and will burn back the insulation until it gets to something that will catch. Aluminium wiring doesn't burn, it just gets too hot if not terminated correctly.

I don't see much of a safety issue either but I don't think it would be all that effective or durable. But hey cant hurt to try.
You don't have to pull the insert to make a good block off plate, many of us have done it with the insert in place, many threads on how to do it. Just make it in two pieces, use cardboard for a cut out.
Plus, not only does aluminum foil protect you from aliens and the NSA stealing your thoughts, it improves TV reception immensely...

As long as you realize you are experimenting, go for it. As opposed to some, I'd be inclined to recommend an approved method.
Keep the aluminum away from the liner. Dissimilar metals may react under heating. Don't want unintended issues.

I assume you mean that the foil doesn't contact the liner, and I agree with your concerns. Hope this is a more helpful response.
Please advise the OP of "approved" methods and materials for block off plates and approved by who.
No problem smarty pants. They specify 22 guage blue steel. His manual likely varies some from this, but this should serve to point out that one's manual likely tells them how.
