Well, last night was -20 and the next couple will be -15 with a stiff 10-20 mph wind.
Wind chills are -30 to -40. So yeah its wicked cold. Not the coldest ive seen but cold.
And the lil F100 nordic isnt having a problem with it. Love this little stove. Wouldn't work for most people but does me just fine. -12 right now .....74 in the house.

Its usually 78 in my living room where the stove is but the adjoining room, my kitchen is draft central, 48 in there unless I run a fan to pull that cold air into the living room. It's an old barn and this part of the house was added on, poorly, it's all exterior walls, no insulation, just drywall. it's so drafty, you can feel the breeze between the cabinet drawers! Good news is, the roof and siding are all coming off thanks to Sandy damage so we are getting wrapped and new insulation soon.

I just bought on of those vornado whole room circulation fans, $40 but it works really well. I have a big lined curtain in the doorway between my living room and kitchen but with the fan on, it keeps both rooms around 70 without trying. It's 70 right now upstairs too, nice, but I'm burning some kiln dried oak splits and the stove flue temps are about 800 so she's crankin out the BTUs now!

The oil furnace has been kicking on about 3am, it's set for 62 but I let it go until we get up at 5:30 and start the fire again for the day. I put 125 gallons in last April and it's all pretty much there so I'm not complaining, don't miss that bill!

Minus-12 at the moment, and the high for today was plus-2. My tiny stove isn't keeping up, so after too many hours at low 60s in the stove room, I just gave up and let the oil-driven $$ burner in the basement bring the temp up to 70 for some relief for a few hours. Luckly, I like cold for sleeping. Sigh.

We do get some nice passive solar in a lot of the house during the day so even when it was only 5 or so all day yesterday we were able to get to about 70 inside...

Nowhere near that cold here, but it's good to hear that I'm not the only one whose stove struggles to keep up in colder temps. My cutoff seems to be single digits. Any colder than that and some oil might get burned. Luckily that hasn't happened yet & I've been OK just with reloading once in the middle of the night.

Only 10F here last night, warm for some of you, but low enough that I lit the insert midweek, possibly the first time that's ever happened. Lit at 5pm, mostly cherry with an oak log across top, soon it was toasty 80F inside, but by 9pm I was worried that I'd be waiting all night to reload. I pulled the coals to the front and opened the air for the blast furnace effect.
I finally reloaded just after 10pm aiming for my first true overnighter. Mostly oak (barely dry enough), with one cherry in the center, by 10:30 the air was open just a hair, stovetop climbing past 400F. I came down for breakfast eight hours later, 14F outside, room at 74F, ~300F on stovetop, maximum temperature paperclip at 550F, fan still running. It was quickly reloaded with three cherry splits and off I went to work. I get a text from the Mrs. an hours later to say she loves the fire.

THIS is what makes it all the effort worthwhile.

Zero two nights in a row. 7 and 10 degree days.
Kitchen Queen 480 is the only heat source. 62* in the farthest bedroom from stove. 1900 sf single level home.
Designed to heat up to 3000 sf with oven door open, I run all night with oven door open, oven "off", not in circulation mode. Mornings I crank it up to cook breakfast, and pull the oven lever to circulate around oven with door open. House gains 5* every two hours. This is the optimum heat output at cruise. Can only take about 4 hours of that, and close air down to 1/2 shutter with oven "off" all day.

That is normal operation of the stock stove. Last summer I added a 3 inch square air inlet below grate for coal capability and automatic temperature control. This keeps the temps much more even with only 5* variation day and night. (The stove loses it's UL listing when modified or burning coal) This thermostat is used on Hitzer hopper fed coal stoves and popular in the Amish community.

This morning it was -29 (@ -21) here with windchill closer to -37C. Supposed to "warm up" to daytime highs in the -10 range this weekend, then milder next week. Late next week the long term forecast is for above freezing, and rain. What a roller-coaster winter this year - we're getting temp swings of 50 F from week to week. I dunno whether to laugh or cry...

It was -8 down here in the southern part of Maine . The Hampton 300 is heating my 1000 sf just fine as long as I keep putting the good stuff ( dried oak ) in the stove .I heard a new weather term yesterday " winter windchill warning " . Evidently " windchill advisory " is down to about a " feels like -35 " but beyond that is a " feels like -45 or worse " & you folks up north were under a winter windchill warning ! Yowza , that's cold ........

Enough talk about cold. Looking at next week's forecast we see mid or high 40's Amazing after what we've gone through and are still going through. One forecast says 50 for Tuesday next week. It has my vote. That warm maybe I'll get the bike out!

-23 Wed morning, -12 this morning. It's certainly cold (I know that's relative), have seen much colder in years previous. Wind out of the northeast last night / this morning prompted a crawl in the crawl space before with a trouble light and a hair dryer. I hate that...

Temp inside the living space was a balmy 76 this morning at 0500. Still loading the King only once per day! Wish i could duct some of the heat down to the water pipes.

Low last night was +1F. It didn't break 10F until almost lunchtime and right now we are topped out at 17F. Expecting tonight's low to be 0-2.

Usually we just burn weekends, but I got home from work yesterday and my wife who is only so-so on the stove first question "when are you going to light us a fire". The stove has been cranking ever since. We have to burn high constantly to keep up in this weather so we are letting the gas supplement overnight.

It was 3 this morning when i got up to take the kids to school. its not so much how cold it was this morning but how cold it has been for the past 4 days. We havent had weather like this in about 3 years where its constantly in the teens for highs and low single digits at nights. two stoves going here non stop for us maintains the house in the mid to high 70s.
