I feel almost bad for posting this after I read the posts from those loving their Breckwells, but here goes:

I have a Big E , been using it since Nov and had to have the convection blower replaced due to bad bearings. Now there is a new issue and I'm hoping someone can help me "diagnose" it.

When I start the stove and fire ignites, the stove makes a revving noise. Like the fan is slowing way down then speeding up. If I turn it to "high fan" the noise stops. If I leave it on "high fan" for 5 minutes or so, I can return it to normal and it will run fine.

Any ideas?

My third stove since 93 but my first Breckwell. I can confidently say it's my last Breckwell. sigh.

Thanks for any direction you can give on the revving noise.

Hi Molly,

Is the stove still under warranty???? If so there were issues with the room fan or convection blower. I had my bigE do the same. I lubed the motor to quite it down until I had it swapped out by my dealer. It was replaced for free. Might want to call the Dealer to see if its covered.

Otherwise if not covered they are going for anywhere from $159 to over $200 dollars.

I would use a cheaper replacement from this link.

http://www.cshincorporated.com/product_info.php/products_id/4053

Or this link.

(broken link removed to http://www.cshincorporated.com/product_info.php/products_id/1654)

Either will work and are much cheaper. Less than $100 with shipping.

Hope this helps

Thanks for replying.

Yes, the stove is still under warranty and I have contacted Breckwell but it's Sunday. I started the stove about a half hour ago to see if the problem magically fixed itself overnight : ). The blower is coming on way too early; maybe a minute after fire ignites instead of 10 minutes+/- after.

Thanks for the links; considering it's only been running since November I'm sure I'll need those links after June when the warranty expires.

Thanks again for your help and enjoy the weekend!

Molly,

That sounds like the POF switch is stuck or failed. If you had a misfired start where it doesn't ignite. The stove would think it started and you would have pellets filling the burn pot.

Try taping the POF snap disk mounted on the exhaust blower housing. May just be stuck.

The stove does ignite and the pellets burn fine but the blower comes on way too early as if the stove thinks it's hotter than it is. I will try tapping the disk and see if it's stuck though.

Thanks!

Molly,

What I was trying to say is if the stove did not ignite. The POF switch is stuck closed and the control thinks it has a fire in the burn pot. You will just have a stove full of pellets. The stove will just keep dropping pellets in to the burn pot as if there was a fire going. I just explained it wrong I guess!

That's what I thought you meant, Jay. I really appreciate your help. I hope to hear something from Breckwell tomorrow.

One way to find out. Shut off the BigE you have and jump the POF and fire it up.

I'll bet you a case it will start the fan almost instantly. It fools the board!

I just repaired a P23I that was doing the same thing. Got 2 case's from the boss. Monday's he's has to wear a pink Ford hat all day too!

Thank you Eric and Jay. At least now I have something I can start with when I hear from Breckwell. You guys are a huge help!

And I bet you're boss will look great in pink! : )

Just an update: the email I sent to Breckwell got a response. They suggested I wait and see if this problem "goes away with time". Yeah. I think I'll call and speak to someone in person.

Thanks again!
