Whack it in half and smell it; if it smells like Wintergreen it is Black Birch; if it just smells sweet it is Cherry. Just looks like Cherry to me....

Cherry bark for sure.
 
The bark looks like Cherry, but there is no color to the heartwood. Cherry has reddish heartwood. I think it is Black Birch, which is also called Cherrybark Birch.
 
Well that's it! Cherry bark and birch wood.:) Everybody is right.

Black Birch is near non-existent in Michigan, not a resident of Barry County, Mi. but very familiar with timber base in that county, I have never seen a Black Birch there. Since OP is from Barry County, Mi. I'm 99.9999% sure this is CHERRY.
 
Doesn't the red were thinking of in cherry fade to a light pink after a month or so of sitting. I know mine has
