Ma
Cut this tree down bark looked different, smelled Luke pine but no needles it had buds on branches??? image.jpgimage.jpgimage.jpg

Is there sassafras in ma this was a lone tree in my woods?

Definitely sassafrass. Yes, it's in Massachusetts, near the northern limit of its range, but I see it right up into southern VT as a small tree usually. Love that smell - reminds me of froot loops, or at least what I remember froot loops smelling like when I was a kid.

I think it's some form of Oak. I see the rays pretty clearly.
Looks like it has rays but I'd put money on Sass. Smell will tell, and that orange inner bark looks very familiar. I've got tons of Sass in the woods here...

I didn't think any other tree aside from Oak would show such distinct rays? I could be wrong about that, but that's what I had picked up from this site. The rays are clearly visible, someone correct me here?

I think it's just an illusion; Saw marks, maybe. Pics are a little fuzzy...

A quick Google search indicates that Sassafras has medullary rays. That is clearly sassafras, due to bark texture, color of the inner bark, color of wood, and I think I can smell it over the internet.

Huh, I never noticed. Lotta things I haven't noticed, though... ;lol I don't cut much of it; It pops too much in the stove for my liking...
