Any good way to slow the burn???

Begreen, The weld to the left of this pic is the edge of the firebox. Any further where it widens out get cool FAST. Condor and others are all 2.5" The lip going horizontal will not let them lie flat. Need something under 2" to work and can't seem to locate anything. I have some motorcycle parts (instrument clusters) manufactured in China. I might have to see if they could stamp a small thermometer out for us fireplace guys LOL
