Any hardwoods that would ooze black/brown sap?

Sorry all but I don't have a picture of some wood that I saw, but it was a grey color with the horizontal lines in it almost like a young Cherry or Birch tree would have, the ends of the wood were multi-colored yellow "rings", not a solid yellow and it was very sappy and oozing black and brown sap. The yellow ends almost looked like Mimosa, but I know it's not that. It didn't quite look like some sort of Pine but I don't know what it was...sorry for no pictures but the description is the best that I can do, just wondering if there are any hardwoods that fit this description or that would ooze brown/black sap?

The wood you describe sounds like black birch.

Pin cherry will ooze sap and look like it has dog turds on it. Not worth much for firewood.

No, I've had Black Birch many times, it's not that; plus it's yellow inside, BB is pinkish-red. I wish it WAS Black Birch

Had that too before, not it. Very yellow inside, I'll have to see if I can get a picture on here.....

Going on the "horizontal lines" you referred to, it could be a fir too. Once in a while in the woods, a balsam fir will trick me into thinking it's a pin cherry because of the same thing.

I think you're right; at first look those lines made me think it was an ornamental Cherry or perhaps Birch, but seeing the very yellow ends with rings made me doubt it, then seeing the brown/black sap really had me confused!
