Scrounged from the roadside. Not native to Aus. Would say softwood but doesn't smell like pine or conifer. Actually no smell at all.
Real straight grain and easy to split. Yellow inside but goes brown in a couple days.

Agree looks like Liriodendron tulipifera type of poplar. Bark has that distinctive tulip-poplar appearance and has green-yellow heartwood, but not familiar with Australia dendro, so not sure what other trees might have similar appearance.
 
I vote for a down under poplar too.
 
Dry it and burn it , you have sweat equity involved already, no sense letting it go to waste

I think you're all right about tulip. They aren't native but are popular for parks and nature strips here.
