I have screening on my rain cap with 1/2" mesh and ash collecting on it. I wasn't sure if it could have eventually blocked the chimney or not so I brushed it off. While I was at it I tapped the top of the cap and some creosote flaked off, it didn't seem excessive and I think because it flaked off is good.
A couple questions, is it normal for ash to accumulate on the screen like that, or is it an indicator of poor wood or temperatures being maintained?
The screening is there to keep birds out, but would I be better off with a bigger mesh that would be less likely to collect ash?
