Ash or Poplar?

I have a hard time telling the difference. There is a leaf pile but I have no idea which are from this tree.

I thougt the opposite branches would make it an ash. This will be a good score then, taking this ash and a nearby hickory.

I'm going to go against the grain and say Tulip Poplar. That bark look too "poplary" to me... I can't see any definitively opposite branches from those pics, and I don't see any ash leaves in that pile.

What I see is a coarse bark typically found on large Tulip Poplar tree, I can make out a few lower branches on the tree that are most certainly alternating from what I can see, and I see Tulip Poplar leaves in the pile...

Of course, better pictures (close-ups of the branches and leaves) could convince me otherwise. TP and Ash are always tough to tell the difference on...

Yep and sadly they are all dying from the EAB. It's all over the place here in Chili and moving east.

And sadly this is my whole yard. This is my second year since EAB was discovered in my yard. Each spring brings bigger devastation as the insect takes hold. In another 2-3 years I will not have a tree alive.

Ugh! Love the firewood-but losing all those trees is too big a price.

At least the branches and bark look like ash.


Maybe the inside is a different species though.

Ash and tulip poplar... see a lot of both on the sawmill piles. The bark does appear similar, depending on the age of the tree. With slab wood, the difference is easier to tell 'cause the wood is ripped. You can see the grain.

Yep, the bottom of the tree will be interesting. The tree is across from Montgomery on a river lot....good eye!

Well, it's down and it is Ash. I don't think the town easter egg hunt on the other side of the river appreciated the saw noise.

Since it's next to a river camping lot I really had to watch for nails, etc...there were 6 or so in the 1st 6' of the trunk, after that clear sailing. I'll probably get a little more than 3/4 cord...maybe even a full cord when it's all done. Def worth the effort and short drive.
