I shopped around last year but ended up spending $30 for a HEPA filter for my shop vac.

already have one, i think its just a big mess, bags get so heavy they rip when you pull them out

Take a look at this and see if it will meet your needs. I have been using one for the last 5 years and does a great job. Filters are cheap and do a good job. No bags.

I empty it after every use to make sure nothing hot stays in there.

I purchased that vac and had a problem with the filter it would not filter properly and soot was coming out the exhaust. you could purchase a hepa filter separately

Ya but thats just the filter . The ash dose not go in a bag it just goes in the can

That is correct. My point was to clarify that there IS something potentially "consumable" inside to stop/catch the ash.
