Hi-

Since I'll be building a wall shield for our wood stove (with 1" air gap), I got to wondering...

What's the best way to attach the 1/2" Durock cement board to the wall? Can I use the ceramic spacer kits and go through the Durock and into the wall studs with screws? Would metal studs be better - attaching those to the studs as furring strips - then the Durock to the metal studs? Something else?

Thanks for any help!

Yes, they make ceramic spacers for this purpose or you could make your own out of sections of 3/8" copper pipe. Or easier yet, snap off 3" wide, 3' or 5' long strips of the 1/2" Durock and pair them up to use as 1" thick vertical furring strips on the studs.

So, sounds like just about any non-combustible material would work as a spacer; makes sense!

Thanks @begreen!
