baby bear info

Hi,im new to the fourm and im looking to get a baby bear for my 1000 sq foot home.small open style concept home so i don't think the size will be a issue heating.my question is will it be ok to place about 1/4 of the back into an exsiting fireplace so the pipe goes up chiminey so it doesn't stick into the room a lot? there was previously a small wood stove before I got the house so there is a pipe already up the chiminey.and I assume there needs to be a block off plate with 6 inch hole,would that be correct?im open to other options but a fisher baby bear is high on my list as my grandmother had one in her home as I grew up.thank you for all your time

Craigslist is your friend. Is that your Baby Bear wanted ad I saw there?

Baffle it to direct more heat forward and you won't have a problem setting it into the hearth. I think the minimum clearance was 2 inches to prevent warping since reduced air flow allows extreme temperature differential. The hottest part of the stove is around the outlet without baffle plate, so you want good circulation there as built without baffle.

that is my add yes! I have a line on one right now so im excited.do you by the baffle do you mean to put the baffle inside the stove or the baffle for the fireplace itself?ive burned wood stoves before but not placed into a hearth.so not sure the 2 inch measurements your speaking of.again thank you for all the help

2 inch is the distance away from a non-combustible to allow air circulation around the side and back sheets. Otherwise it stays too hot and the heat that radiates off the front keeps the front half of side sheet cooler. This temperature differential causes uneven heating and uneven expansion. The baffle is a plate inside. Here's a thread I posted when I had a Mama Bear in the middle of my kitchen that was radiating too much heat rearward toward the fridge. After trying a UL stove board propped up behind it and wet laundry on a rack behind it, I designed a baffle plate to match what was called a "Smoke Shelf Baffle" that was designed by Fisher to reduce smoke particles as the EPA laws came into effect in the 80's. They were only factory installed in the double door stoves. The chimney flue size becomes very important when you increase firebox temperature for a cleaner burn and decrease chimney temperature slightly. So you need the same diameter flue all the way up as the stove outlet, and preferably insulated flue liner. This should be the size and type flue connected with or without baffle plate.

The first Fisher Stove was built with side vent to set across the hearth to prevent taking up room in the home yet allow circulation all around stove. All the models were made with top, rear or side vent for that purpose.

This is the reason for a baffle inside to prevent stress cracks around outlet where it would be the hottest without baffle.

Still very fixable with a welder with a steel plate stove.

This guy always seems to have fishers for sale in NH. I called him once to see what he wanted for one, said they are in great shape and is asking in the 4-500 range. I think is high, considering what I got my mama for if you have time, take the spring summer to look around there is deals out there if you can wait.

I got a line on a couple different baby bears and I'm going to jump on one this weekend. What's the best cleaner or paint to use to really bring then back to life? I plan to do a clean Restoration on it before I put it in my house
